Google, Content Farms, and Scraping

Approximately a month ago Google announced that it was planning to change its algorithms, ostensibly to provide a higher quality of search results for each search query, and this change has very recently gone into effect. For most people this change has no effect on their website and/or it’s rankings whatsoever, but websites that are filled with “shallow” and “low quality” content might be feeling the burn. Although Google won’t just outright come out and say this, the purpose of the new algorithm is to combat content that are produced from what’s commonly called “Content Farms” and “Scrapers”.

Content Farms are commonly described as companies that employ large numbers of freelance writers who write a copious amount of textual content that is specifically designed to satisfy algorithms for higher page rankings on search engine websites like Google. Most of this type of content can be called “good enough” – i.e, the content gives superficial information that is related to the search query but lacks unique or insightful input. Google believes that these types of articles (and blogs) are boxing out higher quality content that offers expert or thoughtful perspectives and Google’s new algorithms will attempt to change the playing field.

Google has created a new classifier that detects repeated spammy words—the sort of phrases you tend to see in junky, automated, self-promoting blog comments. These types of words or phrasing are great for Search Engine spiders, but not so good for human readers. When Google encounters blogs or websites with low quality, spammy words coupled with superficial knowledge of the subject, Google is going to rank that site lower.

Here is an example of what may qualify as a low quality and shallow article:
If the article on your website is focused on a very specific popular search term that is just a flash-in-the-pan trend – for example, “Miley Cyrus New Tattoo”. If your website is not related to Miley Cyrus, Tattoos, or the specific Tattoo Parlor that inked her, this article may be tagged as shallow. It will definitely be tagged as low-quality if there are redirect links and ads all over the page.  Think about it – if your site is dedicated to “Organic Kelp Products” (is that a potential niche?!? Need to check…) and there is an article about Miley Cyrus inexplicably on this website,  this article is obviously pandering to the search engines in hope of generating a high search ranking for a very specific term (if only for one day!) with the ultimate goal of redirecting traffic to the rest of the Organic Kelp website.

Or here is another example, one that doesn’t involve a hot trend:
Let’s pretend I have a website about Indian wedding saris and I have an article or blog post on my site that goes something like this, “Indian wedding saris are the most beautiful saris. They come in every color but red is the most popular Indian wedding sari. Green saris can also be used for Indian wedding saris. Silk saris, Georgette Saris, and Cotton Saris are popular wedding saris. Brides wear unique wedding saris for their wedding. An Indian Wedding Sari is a sure bet to look beautiful at wedding”.

Did that article actually tell you anything? There are a lot of words there, but will you walk away with any knowledge? By the end of this blog post, will you remember anything I just said about saris? Probably not. The article is redundant – Indian Wedding Saris and minor variations on that phrase – which in the past would have caught the attention of Google Spiders and quite possibly ranked my article highly. However, using Google’s new classifier, this article would JUMP out as shallow and low-quality (which it is). Now imagine if all of the articles on my website were of similar quality to the article above….not good!

To make the article better – to show some depth and knowledge – I could go into regional differences of wedding saris, the price ranges one could expect to pay, the history of wedding saris, what colors and patterns represent, other accessories one could wear with a wedding sari, wedding traditions, etc. I would put the focus of my article into a context that shows more research, thereby providing higher quality and unique content. Humans will appreciate it more and so will Google’s new algorithm. If the effort is made to create outstanding content, the rankings will reward you.

Here is a real example I found scouring the internet. It’s an article that’s pretty highly ranked (that’s obviously going to change very soon, you’ll see why) and concerns DIY (Do – It – Yourself) Wedding Projects. The article title leads me to believe that if I were trying to plan a wedding I would really enjoy reading this article, and that it may even give me a brilliant idea! But once I click on the title, this is the pitiful article I’m left to read:

Are you serious!?! This is so vague and superficial….nothing in this article provides anything that indicates thoughtful analysis/ideas or that even more than two minutes was spent typing this little diddy. If I was a frazzled from trying to organize a wedding I’d be royally ticked at this waste of time. If the author spent more time on the article – used pictures, gave specific instructions, gave resources on where to buy the materials, etc. – the article would be infinitely more impressive and useful. Don’t let your articles be like the one above – put in a bit more effort, be more thorough, and give a searcher quality they will enjoy to read!

This doesn’t mean the era of hiring freelance writers is over – but a bit more awareness is certainly called for. If you are going to hire a writer to generate content, hire someone that has demonstrated that they can write high quality, deep, thoughtful, unique content that humans would enjoy reading. Yes, it may cost a bit more, but higher quality and unique articles will be generated for you, which will in turn lead to higher rankings.
Another type of content Google is cracking down on includes scraper content. If you own a website that just scrapes content from other websites and has no original content, you might be in trouble. There are some legitimate ways to pull content from other sources such as RSS files with permission, or using just a very small amount of content under fair use guidelines, but it’s incredibly important that the vast bulk of your website has its own unique and useful content to balance out the legitimate scraped content. You must have original content on your site, it’s imperative!

Google is very firm on this issue – you can get articles from wherever and however you want, and they’re not policing content farms – but if the content-farm or scraper generated article you put forth on your website is shallow and low-quality you will not enjoy high rankings.

  • How to tackle support issues

And more, so much more….in fact, we’ll explain how all of these aspects can be made infinitely easier!

If you ever see this error message:
“Internet Explorer Script Error – An error has occurred on this page”

Don’t fret! There is a simple solution. Of course, you can always submit a support ticket and we’ll be happy to help…but if you feel like fixing this quickly and on your own, here is the way to do it!

1.)    If you have Micro Niche Finder open, you must close it.

2.)    Update your operating system with the latest service pack – for Windows, you can use the Windows Update button (you’ll generally see it on the toolbar). If there are any optional updates available, download those too. Before you download the latest service pack though it is highly suggested you create a backup. Here is a great youtube video explaining how to do this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MF6gboBJcuo.

3.)    Once your operating system is updated, we suggest installing or reinstalling Internet Explorer 8 at the least (but actually, it’s even better if you download IE 9 beta, especially if you are using Vista or IE7) You can get this here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/worldwide-sites.aspx

4.)    Restart your computer

That should do the trick! It’s important to update everything because Microsoft ended support for
Windows 7 with no service pack (on January 14, 2011), Windows Vista with no service pack (on April 13, 2010) and Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (on July 13, 2010). If for some reason this does not work, please submit a support ticket so that we can fix it right away!

  • His specific SEO Strategies
  • The brilliant way he picks niches
  • And how can YOU make money now

Error 5: Access is Denied Message

If you have recently tried installing the update you might have seen the following message:

“Error 5: access is denied”

Not everyone has this error message pop-up, but if you see this, there are two possible ways to proceed. If you use Webroot Spysweeper, this post may pertain to you in particular. If you need help, you can always submit a support ticket, but this post may have your answer so keep reading!

The first course of action may be to temporarily disable your anti-virus/firewall for the duration of the install process. Once Micro Niche Finder is installed, you can enable your anti-virus/firewall again.

Make sure that your anti-spyware/virus has the latest definitions. You can do this by checking to see if your anti-spyware/virus is up to date. If it is not, update the latest version. Once your anti-spyware/virus software is up to date and has the latest definitions, please check that Micro Niche Finder is listed as a trusted program. We have had several reports that Webroot Spysweeper in particular is detecting a “false positive” and blocking access to the installer; to fix this, just go into Webroot and mark Micro Niche Finder as a trusted program and it will then allow the installer to function.

This will often correct the problem and the error message will go away. If for some reason that does not work, there is another option for Webroot users.

You can temporarily set Webroot’s Automatic scanning off – you can turn it back on after the update has been installed – and under the “Settings” tab check “Turn Execution Shield OFF when entering Gamer Mode” and then set the Gamer Mode to “On”.  Micro Niche Finder should successfully install after this. Once the latest version of Micro Niche Finder has been downloaded you can go back into Webroot and restore the settings to however they were previously.

If neither of these options work – PLEASE by all means get in touch with us via our support suite. Submit a ticket and one of our support staff will get back to you ASAP and work out a solution.

WebGL

HTML5, although available (you’ve probably been using it without realizing it) is still technically in development, and some of its related technology and scripts are available right now to be experimented with, tweaked, and built upon. One of these is called WebGL, and if you’re not familiar with WebGL please allow me to introduce you to the future!

WebGL is a Javascript API that makes it possible to create 3D graphics that update in real time inside the computers browser (FYI: I use Google Chrome a lot, so the following experiments are within Chrome). There is no need to download any special software or plug-in to see these 3D images. For some browsers, such as Chrome or Firefox, this technology seems to work flawlessly already. For Macs, Safari only supports WebGL on Macs running Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6)…other versions won’t work. To see if your preferred browser has the capabilities to run WebGL, click here.

Don’t be shocked to see this kind of script on websites, cell phones, and other types of interactive technology before too long (once the kinks and hypothetical security issues are worked out, of course). 3D technology is becoming more prevalent. First it was in the movies, now there are 3D televisions, and soon perhaps there will be a 3D internet. This could change the way we learn, the way we advertise, the way we play games, and the way we interact with one another. The potential here is HUGE.

If you are a designer, or want to become a designer, there are tutorials already available on the web about how to integrate and create WebGL . In short, these tutorials will teach you how to access the power of a computer’s graphics hardware via scripts on webpages. For most of us that previous sentence means very little but for designers and people with a reasonable amount of programming knowledge, WebGL opens a whole new world of programming possibilities…

Now let’s get to the cool part. Want to see what WebGL looks like? You can see all sorts of variations here.  My favorite is called “WebGL Aquarium”, so that’s going to be my example.

Once you find WebGL Aquarium (it’s one of the last options on the page), click its little screenshot and then click the button that says “Launch Experiment”. If you click on the youtube video instead of “Launch Experiment”, you’ll miss out on a lot of the fun.

You’ll then be taken into the aquarium, where you can play with the settings (the amount of fish, the view, fog, the list goes on). Fun tip: If you press the letter “L” on your keyboard something funny happens…just wait for the sharks…that’s all I’m going to say.

The above screenshot does not do it justice. It’s very interactive, it runs without a problem (again, I’m using Chrome…if you’re using something else and there seems to be a problem, check here ) and you can change the settings to suit your tastes.

The experiment titled “Jellyfish” is also one of my favorites. The “Body Browser” has lots of potential, and the “Starburst” one is fun because you can change the view with your mouse; come to think of it, all of them are interesting in their own way, so check them all out.

If you feel like you’re capable of making an awesome WebGL experiment, you can submit it to Google (and isn’t that something! Google is reaching out to the masses…very rare folks, very rare). If they accept your experiment, you’ll be a pioneer in the field.

Eventually, this type of script will be more accessible for everyone, much like Javascript is now. If you learned and mastered this kind of script you could potentially make a ton of money from creating products related to it, just like programmers do now with plugins, informational courses, doing private work for clients and businesses, and such. If you don’t want to learn how to program WebGL, I wouldn’t fret about it too much. There are great scripts and Plugins you can get for either  free, donation only, or a nominal fee now so it’s not unreasonable to guess that one day WebGL will follow the same route.

Of course, from a marketing standpoint, this could completely change the way one presents information and highlights their product(s). Advertising might radically change….oh yes, it’s going to be very interesting to see how WebGL manifests itself across the web!
